It is a trick-taking game that's based on Euchre. Rummy 500 first appeared in the early 1900's and was originally call rhum. It was copyrighted by the United States Playing Card Company in 1904. It was highly popular until about 1920 when auction bridge surpassed it. The game of canasta and several other games are believed to have developed from this popular form of rummy.
The basic pattern of Rummy was established in Oriental tile and card games such as the Chinese mah-johgg and Japanese hanafuda. The oldest example of a rummy style game in the West is the 19th-century Mexican game of conquian.
